Wireless Pole Attachment Webinar Series

Return to webinar recordings

Series Description

The rapid and widespread deployment of new small cell wireless broadband facilities has become a priority of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), Congress, and many states. As a result, public power utilities across the nation are facing increasingly complex wireless pole attachment issues and growing requests for attachments of small cell facilities or distributed antenna systems are creating significant new challenges.

Learn about the latest developments and most significant issues facing public power utilities at the federal, state and local levels, including an in-depth review of 5G. Find out how public power utilities of all sizes are successfully negotiating agreements and managing wireless attachments.

The three-part series, recorded in 2018 includes the following webinars:

  • A Deep Dive into 5G Small Cell Wireless: Truths, Myths and Implications for Public Power
  • New Regulatory and Legislative Developments Impacting Wireless Attachments
  • Lessons from the Field: Wireless Deployment Best Practices and Issues

Recommended for

Managers, engineers, lawyers, and other representatives of public power utilities that own or control poles, ducts, conduits, towers, buildings, or other facilities that support wireline or wireless communications attachments.

Webinar #1: A Deep Dive into 5G Small Cell Wireless: Truths, Myths and Implications for Public Power

Recording length: 1 hour, 32 minutes

Wireless carriers and their allies claim that a geometric increase in wireless support facilities within the public rights of way is necessary, in order to enable and support increasingly robust wireless broadband, Smart City initiatives, the Internet of Things, self-driving vehicles, and many other next-generation applications. The widespread push for faster and less expensive access to wireless support facilities could profoundly affect the ability of public power utilities to manage their poles and other facilities.

This webinar will address the facts and myths surrounding Small Cell Wireless, 5G, and other next-generation wireless technologies, as well as the challenges and opportunities that these developments create for public power utilities.

Webinar #2: New Regulatory and Legislative Developments Impacting Wireless Attachments

Recording length: 1 hour, 45 minutes

Wireless broadband providers, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), Congress and state legislatures are increasingly pushing for ways to streamline and lower the cost of access to poles, ducts, conduits, street lights, towers, and other publicly-owned infrastructure to facilitate the deployment of small cell wireless facilities. The FCC has created a Broadband Deployment Advisory Committee (BDAC) to make recommendations on model federal, state and local laws and regulations aimed at facilitating wireless broadband deployment. BDAC is poised to finalize its recommendations in the spring and early part of summer ‘18.

This webinar will cover the BDAC recommendations and the significant impact that they could have on the ability of public power utilities to manage their poles and other facilities, if enacted by the FCC or the states. You’ll also learn about the status of wireless regulatory and legislative initiatives of the FCC, Congress and the States.

Webinar #3: Lessons from the Field: Wireless Deployment Best Practices and Issues

Recording length: 1 hour, 41 minutes

Public power utilities of all sizes are increasingly being faced with request for access to utility poles and streetlight poles by small cell wireless carriers. While all utilities share the same underlying need to be able to manage these attachments in a safe, secure and reliable manner, different sized-utilities will likely face different concerns in terms of the volume of demand and the available resources and ability to manage these requests. Learn about key issues, best practices, and lessons learned in addressing these attachment issues from the perspective of a small, mid-size, and large public power utility.
