As customer interest in and adoption of grid-edge technologies - such as smart home devices, battery storage, rooftop solar and electric vehicles - expands, utilities will need to rethink their standard rate models to ensure continued equitable allocation of power recovery costs. Stemming from facilitated discussions on the biggest challenges these technologies present to public power, this report explains the suite of emerging rate designs and provides examples of how utilities have deployed different rate structures to account for grid-edge technologies.
