Proactive Grid Build for Transportation Electrification

Electric utilities are projected to see significant load growth in the coming years – from the rapid expansion of data centers and industrial facilities and due to electrification of the transportation sector and buildings. “Proactive grid build” is a new industry term that represents the strategy of leveraging resources and tools to support the anticipated large-scale electric load growth and customer desire for quick service connection.

This brief reviews the array of planning and policy challenges for utilities in pursuing proactive grid build in their communities. Suggested strategies to help plan for and manage this new load, related policy considerations, and cost allocation options fall under four categories:

-    Improving utility resource planning
-    Developing load management technology and programs
-    Deploying distributed energy resources
-    Evaluating cost recovery options

The brief includes a checklist of recommended next steps for public power utilities that aligns with these four categories.
