IID Affirms Commitment to Advancing Renewables in Wake of Geothermal Project Suspending Permitting

California public power utility Imperial Irrigation District remains dedicated to advancing renewable energy in the region following Black Rock Geothermal LLC’s decision to suspend permitting with the California Energy Commission for new geothermal projects.

“It is important to note that this suspension does not affect existing geothermal facilities,” it said.

IID’s service territory supports the existing interconnection of over 750 MW of geothermal energy and 700 MW of solar and storage capacity, with additional projects actely progressing through the interconnection process.

The district has worked extensively to facilitate the development of the Black Rock geothermal plants and 4,000 MW of renewable energy projects seeking to interconnect to IID’s system.

“While geothermal projects face unique challenges, including location-specific requirements and high development costs, IID has implemented measures to streamline interconnection and prioritize ready-to-develop projects. Recent discussions with Black Rock included exploring a potential conservancy easement to support the geothermal projects,” it said.

“The Imperial Irrigation District is committed to supporting renewable energy and collaborating with developers to overcome challenges,” said Gina Dockstader, Chairwoman of the IID Board of Directors. “We remain ready to assist Black Rock and others in identifying viable paths forward.”

“As the energy landscape evolves, IID continues to support solar and battery projects, with several currently under construction. Geothermal energy remains a key component of the region’s renewable future, and IID will continue to provide appropriate support to ensure its success,” the utility said.

“A variety of factors influence project development, but IID is committed to exploring solutions and assisting all interconnection customers,” said Jamie Asbury, IID General Manager.
