Brownsville Public Utilities Board Announces Launch of AMI Smart Meter Program

Texas public power utility Brownsville Public Utilities Board recently announced the launch of its Advanced Metering Infrastructure Smart Meter Program, “a transformative initiative that will enhance utility services for its customers by providing real-time data, improved efficiency, and greater convenience.”

Starting April 7, 2025, BPUB is set to upgrade traditional electric and water meters to advanced digital smart meters throughout its service area. This new technology facilitates automated meter readings, removing the need for usage estimates when meters are hard to access.

"It also enhances customer access to energy and water usage data, empowering households and businesses to make more informed consumption decisions. Additionally, BPUB will introduce an online platform in Fall 2025, providing customers with access to their usage data and proactive notifications," the utility said.

“Initiating the AMI Smart Meter Program marks a major milestone in our dedication to delivering dependable and cutting-edge utility services. These smart meters will enhance our service efficiency and offer customers improved access to their utility data, enabling them to make informed choices about their consumption," said Marilyn  Gilbert, BPUB General Manager and CEO.

To facilitate a seamless transition, BPUB has enlisted Allegiant Utility Services to manage the meter upgrades.

The implementation of the project will occur in phases, with installation starting on April 7, 2025, and with full deployment expected by 2027. Customers will receive updates and detailed information as their area becomes eligible for smart meter installation.
