Bob Kahn to Retire as General Manager of Austin Energy

Bob Kahn, General Manager of Texas public power utility Austin Energy, recently announced his intent to retire effective June 30, 2025.

His last day in the office will be April 30, 2025, an April 2 memorandum from Austin City Manager T.C. Broadnax to the Austin City Council and Mayor noted.

Stuart Reilly, Austin Energy’s Deputy General Manager of Business Services, will serve as Interim General Manager for Austin Energy beginning on May 1.

“Bob Kahn’s career in public service includes more than 40 years dedicated to the electric utility industry,” the memorandum noted.

He returned to Austin Energy as General Manager in 2023 after serving as General Manager of the Texas Municipal Power Agency and as President and CEO of the Electric Reliability Council of Texas, where he oversaw electric power delivery to 21 million Texans and ensured grid reliability for 85% of the state, Broadnax noted.

At Austin Energy, Kahn previously served as Deputy General Manager, following eight years as General Counsel and Vice President for Legal Services.

“He played a pivotal role in shaping electric utility policy and was instrumental in drafting Texas’s retail deregulation legislation,” the memorandum said.

“Since returning as General Manager in 2023, Bob has led Austin Energy through a period of meaningful progress. Under his leadership, the utility strengthened its financial position, improved system reliability, and successfully advanced a new Resource, Generation and Climate Protection Plan to 2035. These accomplishments reflect Bob’s steady leadership and his commitment to building a strong foundation for the future of public power in Austin,” wrote Broadnax.
