The City Council for the public power community of Danville, Va., recently approved and authorized a negotiated lease agreement for an energy storage facility.
An agenda for the March 18 City Council meeting noted that public power utility Danville Utilities was seeking to enter into a lease and franchise agreement for the installation, placement, and operation of commercial energy storage facilities, including battery technology, on City-owned property.
Granting the franchise agreement will permit Lightshift Energy to install, place, and operate commercial energy storage facilities, including battery technology, at the site.
At the meeting, Jason Grey, Director of Utilities for Danville, told council members that “We’re looking to have the project in operation” in May 2026. The system is an 11-megawatt battery, he added.
Lightshift Energy’s 10.5 MW battery facility in Danville, which has been operating since 2022, is expected to save the city of Danville more than $40 million, Lightshift Energy noted in 2024.
