Director of City of Columbia Utilities Dave Sorrell to Retire March 14

Dave Sorrell, director of City of Columbia Utilities in Columbia, Mo., will retire from the City of Columbia on March 14 after 24 years of service to the community.

Sorrell joined the city as a civil engineer with the Public Works Department in 2001. In September 2006, he was promoted to the position of engineer in the Electric division of the Water and Light department and then transferred to the department’s Water division in 2008.

In May 2010, Sorrell was promoted to Sewer Utility manager in the Public Works department, where he was responsible for the operation and maintenance of the sewer collection system, the wastewater treatment plant and the constructed wetland treatment units.

Sorrell was reclassified to an engineering manager in the Public Works Department in October 2012, gaining the additional responsibilities of the Stormwater division and engineering projects for both Sewer and Stormwater.

In October 2015, Sorrell was promoted to the assistant director of Utilities with the City of Columbia Utilities department and oversaw the Sewer, Stormwater and Solid Waste divisions. He was named utilities director in March 2020, which added the Electric, Water and Railroad divisions to his list of responsibilities.
