Winter Park Electric Utility’s Linemen Training Day Hones Skills, Creates Culture of Preparedness

Florida’s Winter Park Electric Utility recently held a training day for linemen, an event that helps linemen hone their skills and creates a culture of preparedness.

“Twice a year, our dedicated team of linemen participate in an intensive training day designed to hone their skills and ensure they’re prepared for any challenge that comes their way,” the public power utility noted.

On March 11, the utility held a training day. “This training isn’t just about safety, it’s about creating a culture of preparedness and excellence that benefits the entire team and the residents of Winter Park,” it noted.

“Training days also foster camaraderie and teamwork, as our linemen collaborate and support each other in different scenarios.”

The exercises “strengthen the bond between the crew, ensuring that they’re ready to respond to emergencies in the safest and most effective way possible.”

What makes the utility's training yard unique is the fact that linemen are the ones who designed and built it themselves. “They know the challenges of their work firsthand, so they’ve created a space that has the capability to perform pole top, manhole and bucket rescues,” the utility said.

The training space “helps ensure they’re mastering skills in an environment that mirrors conditions they encounter on the job. Each rescue drill and safety procedure they practice directly translates to a skilled, safe response when service interruptions or emergencies occur, benefiting our entire community.”

Another training day will occur this year, but no official date has been scheduled, said Stephanie Silva, Events and Marketing Coordinator for the City of Winter Park.
