Washington D.C., February 26, 2025—Representative Rudy Yakym (R-IN) today received the American Public Power Association’s Public Service Award at APPA’s Legislative Rally in Washington, D.C.
Mr. Yakym was honored by APPA for exceptional leadership on issues of importance to public power—particularly his vital role as cochairman of the House Municipal Finance Caucus, a bipartisan caucus that, for nearly a decade, has been steadfast in its support of tax-exempt municipal financing.
Less than two weeks ago, Mr. Yakym joined Representatives David Kustoff (R-TN), Gwen Moore (D-WI), and Jimmy Panetta (D-CA) in introducing the Investing in Our Communities Act, which aims to reinstate public power’s ability to issue tax-exempt advance refunding bonds. In introducing the Investing in Our Communities Act, Representative Yakym noted that helping state and local governments lower their borrowing costs will free up valuable resources to “ensure our communities can continue to develop projects that advance economic growth.” APPA strongly supports this piece of legislation, which will enable public power utilities to better manage the debt they use to finance energy infrastructure investments.
“Representative Yakym understands that tax-exempt municipal financing is a critical engine for creating jobs and upgrading our nation’s infrastructure,” said APPA President & CEO Scott Corwin. “His leadership of the Municipal Finance Caucus and work on the House Ways & Means Committee has been, and will continue to be, vital to protecting public power’s access to the financing tools that keep our communities reliably and affordably powered.”
Mr. Yakym has represented Indiana’s 2nd Congressional District, home to nine public power utilities serving approximately 100,000 people, since 2022.
