GM Taps AI, Machine Learning to Expand EV Charging Network in U.S.

General Motors is using artificial intelligence and machine learning to help find the ideal locations for adding EV charging stations across the U.S., it reported on Jan. 8.

GM noted that it is collaborating with EVgo to build a total of 2,850 DC public charging stalls, including 400 fast charging stalls at flagship destinations in major metropolitan areas across the U.S.

“These locations will feature high-power 350kW fast chargers, pull-through layouts for easier maneuvering, and many will have all-weather canopies and bright lighting for safety and convenience,” GM said.

Additionally, GM has teamed up with Pilot Travel Centers and EVgo to add up to 2,000 DC fast charging stalls at up to 500 Pilot and Flying J travel centers across the U.S., “making it easier for families to do long-distance travel and road trips in their EVs.” More than 130 of these locations are open so far.

GM data scientists are using AI tools to identify strategic locations for new EV charging stations across the country. Predictive analytics and geospatial algorithms evaluate EV traffic patterns to select the best charger locations.

These tools approach site selection as a mathematical optimization problem, it said.

An algorithm evaluates key criteria including traffic flow and proximity to other chargers. GM also provides detailed maps to illustrate the model’s decision-making process.

The model’s recommendations are then combined with expert insights to finalize the ideal charging station placement.

Once the data analysis is complete, GM collaborates with Pilot Flying J and EVgo to make these precisely pinpointed charging opportunities a reality.
