Generation
The Omaha Public Power District has entered a partnership with Kiewit Corporation, an Omaha-based construction and engineering firm, to add new natural gas generation and upgrade two existing natural gas turbines.
Transmission
A new study by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory “provides practical options for developing more interregional transmission infrastructure to move toward a transformed power system,” NREL said on Jan. 17.

Leeward Renewable Energy on Jan. 15 announced over 700-megawatt alternating current of renewable energy projects in Oklahoma that are supported in part by long-term power purchase agreements with Google.
Transmission
The U.S. Department of Energy’s Grid Deployment Office, in partnership with the U.S. Department of the Interior’s (DOI) Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM), on Jan. 16 released an action plan for offshore wind transmission development in the U.S. West Coast Region to address coastal and offshore wind (OSW) transmission challenges on the U.S. West Coast.
Grid Modernization
The U.S. Department of Energy’s Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) on Jan. 15 announced $30 million for projects “to drive advancements in the resiliency, efficiency, and adaptability of America’s power grid.”
Electric Vehicles
Idaho National Laboratory researchers developed a tool designed to aid potential funding applicants, local utilities, state agencies and other stakeholders plan and prepare for new EV charging stations.
Environment
The public power city of Alameda, Calif., is making progress on its climate goals, achieving a 29% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions since 2005.
The U.S. Department of Energy’s Interconnection Innovation e-Xchange on Jan. 16 released a new roadmap that can lead to shorter timelines and better outcomes for connecting clean energy resources to the distribution and sub-transmission grids, DOE said.
